The GoF book has had an immense impact on how programmers think about building solutions. Unfortunately, design patterns get abused a lot, with nary a thought on the forces that should be leading to their usage. I have had to rescue many projects which went overboard with patterns but had almost no functionality in the implementation. The problem of over engineered design patterns is so rampant that I am beginning to think of GoF as the new scripture that is being followed blindly by the faithful.

I hope your talk helps people put patterns in the right context. They have their place but they are the end.
