Why write tests?

Everybody will agree with the usefulness of writing tests, but in practice it takes some time before novice programmers pay attention to them. That's only the beginning of the story, intent to design a test suite is not enough, and even the most experienced programmer may be caught by bugs deserving an appearance in a Monty Python movie.
